16 x 100 = 1600
16 times 100 is 1600. Sixteen takes two zeros. The answer is also 40 squared, and it is 100 doubled four times over. Working, calculator and neighbours below.
16 × 100 = 1,600
Adding 16 to itself 100 times gives the same answer.
The working
Add the two zeros from the 100 to the 16 and you have 1600. Backwards, 1600 divided by 16 = 100 and 1600 divided by 100 = 16.
Doubling gets you there too
16 is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, so you can reach the answer by doubling 100 four times and never multiply at all:
- 100 doubled is 200
- 200 doubled is 400
- 400 doubled is 800
- 800 doubled is 1600
Two of those steps are pages of their own: 4 x 100 = 400 and 8 x 100 = 800. This only works because 16 is a power of two, which is why doubling is no help at all on a pair like 7 x 100.
1600 is a square number
40 x 40 = 1600, so the square root of 1600 is exactly 40. That is not luck. 16 is 4 squared and 100 is 10 squared, and a square times a square is always a square: 4 x 10 = 40. Most answers in the x 100 family are not perfect squares, so this one is worth remembering.
Sixteen means ounces
There are 16 ounces in a pound, so 100 pounds is 1600 ounces. Any recipe or shipping weight scaled up by a hundred runs through this same product.
